Search Tips

Phrase Searching

  • To search for multiple words as an exact phrase, place all the words inside quotation marks.
    • example: "United States supreme court"

 Truncation

  • To find different forms of the same word, use the * character to accomodate different endings.
    • example: child* (finds the words "child", "children", "childhood", "childish", etc.)

 And, Or, and Not

  • Use the operator "and" to find results that include all of the words you enter, in any order. Most searches use an "automatic and" unless you tell them to do something else. This narrows your search.
    • example: water and pollution
  • Use the "or" operator to broaden your search and accomodate different words for the same thing.
    • example: teen* or adolescents or "young adults"
  • Use the "and not" operator to exclude words from your search results.
    • example: aids and not teaching

Advanced Search

Use the Advanced Search to combine multiple searches by using more than one line.
example: teen* or adolescents or "young adults" and smoking or tobacco
In the Advanced Search, you can use special limiters such as Location or Publication Date.
