The Birth of Conservative Judaism: Solomon Schechter's Disciples and the Creation of and American Religious Movement - Michael R. Cohen
Call Number: 296.8342 Co 4, b
ISBN: 9780231156356
Publication Date: 2012
"By midcentury, Conservative Judaism had become the largest American Jewish grouping in the United States, guided by Schechter's disciples and their continuing efforts to embrace diversity while eschewing divisive debates. Yet Conservative Judaism's fluid boundaries also proved problematic for the movement, frustrating many rabbis who wanted a single platform to define their beliefs. Cohen demonstrates how a legacy of tension between diversity and boundaries now lies at the heart of Conservative Judaism's modern struggle for relevance."

Religion and Human Rights: An Introduction - John Witte; M. Christian Green
Call Number: 201.723 Re 5, h
ISBN: 0199733449
Publication Date: 2011
"The relationship between religion and human rights is both complex and inextricable. While most of the world's religions have supported violence, repression, and prejudice, each has also played a crucial role in the modern struggle for universal human rights. Most importantly, religions provide the essential sources and scales of dignity and responsibility, shame and respect, restraint and regret, restitution and reconciliation that a human rights regime needs to survive and flourish in any culture."

Search Tips

Phrase Searching

To search for multiple words as an exact phrase, place all the words inside quotation marks.

example: "United States supreme court"

Truncation

To find different forms of the same word, use the * character to accomodate different endings.

example: child* (finds the words "child", "children", "childhood", "childish", etc.)

And, Or, and Not

Use the operator "and" to find results that include all of the words you enter, in any order. Most searches use an "automatic and" unless you tell them to do something else. This narrows your search.

example: water and pollution

Use the "or" operator to broaden your search and accomodate different words for the same thing.

example: teen* or adolescents or "young adults"

Use the "and not" operator to exclude words from your search results.

example: aids and not teaching

Advanced Search

Use the Advanced Search to combine multiple searches by using more than one line.

example: teen* or adolescents or "young adults"

and

smoking or tobacco

In the Advanced Search, you can use special limiters such as Location or Publication Date.
