What is GIS?

GIS stands for geographic information systems. GIS deal with spatial data and their analysis. They thus consists of data, the tools and procedures used to analyze the data, and the people doing the analysis. While GIS-like analysis has existed as early as the mid-nineteenth century, today the term GIS is associated particularly with software packages used to analyze spatial data. This software as several key functions related to the data: input, storage, management, retrieval, manipulation, analysis and modeling, output, and display. GIS serve numerous fields including but not limited to environmental management, urban planning, water management, health care research, and archaeology.
