Searching for GIS Data

Numerous GIS data sets are freely available throughout the Web. In addition to the sources highlighted on this page you can find others with some simple Google searches. Try: GIS Data LIbguides. Also try: GIS data site: edu (or site: gov)

 

International Data

Canada GeoGratis Free, downloadable Canadian GIS data.

CGIAR-CSI or the Consortium for Spatial Information (CGIAR-CSI) is spatial science community that facilitates CGIAR’s international agricultural development research using spatial analysis, GIS, and remote sensing.

DIVA-GIS Free spatial data for countries around the world, including country-level data for any country of the world.

SEDAC The Socioeconomic Data and Applications Center is a data center in NASA's Earth Observing System Data and Information System (EOSDIS) hosted by CIESIN at Columbia University.

UN Data  contains over 60 million data points covering  themes such as: Agriculture, Crime, Education, Employment, Energy, Environment, Health, HIV/AIDS, Human Development, Industry, Information and Communication Technology, National Accounts, Population, Refugees, Tourism, and Trade.

UN Environmental Data Explorer is the authoritative source for data sets used by UNEP and its partners in the Global Environment Outlook (GEO) report and other integrated environment assessments. 

 

United States Data

Data.gov Home of the US Government's open data. Includes data on agriculture, business, climate, energy, and more. 

GeoPlatform.gov GeoPlatform provides shared and trusted geospatial data, services, and applications for use by the public and by government agencies and partners

National Map  As one of the cornerstones of the U.S. Geological Survey's (USGS) National Geospatial Program, The National Map is a collaborative effort among the USGS and other Federal, State, and local partners to improve and deliver topographic information for the Nation. The geographic information available from The National Map includes orthoimagery (aerial photographs), elevation, geographic names, hydrography, boundaries, transportation, structures, and land cover.

NHGIS National Historical Geographic Information System provides free aggregate census data and GIS-compatible boundary files for the United States between 1790 and 2013

TIGER Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing products are spatial extracts from the Census Bureau's MAF/TIGER database, containing features such as roads, railroads, rivers, as well as legal and statistical geographic areas.

Iowa Geographic Map Server provides free access to Iowa geographic map data through an on-line map viewer and through Web Map Service (WMS) connections for GIS.
