About Scholarly Journals

Professors often specify that your sources need to include articles from "scholarly" or peer-reviewed journals. How can you tell if a journal is "scholarly"?

Here are some tips for evaluating a journal by its content, and a shortcut of two for limiting your search results to the right kinds of materials:

  • Who publishes this journal?

  • Who writes for this journal?

  • What is the writing like?

  • Are the conclusions supported by evidence?

  • How did you get to this article in the first place?

Getting Started

Remember to try your search in different databases (RILM, JSTOR, ProjectMUSE, etc.) to make sure you are not missing something good. You can always include EBSCO's Academic Search Premier but it's not advisable to rely solely on that one.

RILM

RILM is a comprehensive music bibliography featuring over 540,000 records on traditional music, popular music, and classical music.  Represented disciplines include musicology, ethnomusicology, pedagogy, psychology, anthropology, sociology, and others.

Articles in Music Education

  • ERIC (for music education)

The ERIC database is designed for research in Education, not music, so a keyword or Subject Heading keeping your results focused on music will need to be part of all of your searches.
